I’ve just spent a lovely afternoon at the Louis Joel centre viewing the works displayed in ‘A sense of place; a sense of space’ – Australian landscape paintings by Dovey Dee. Dovey is an American artist who lives in the western suburbs of Melbourne.
I’ve attended a fair few exhibitions at the Joel over the last year, it’s my new local community artspace and I must say that Dovey’s exhibition has been my favourite to date. The exhibition was curated really professionally, with enough space to breathe between works. Along each long wall are framed field drawings created with oil pastel – these little studies create movement and texture and help engage the viewer in a story about the rugged and ever-changing terrain they now find themselves in. The 3 centrepieces are large and finished with bold colours. Their line on the far wall sets a mood that is quintessentially Australian. It’s a tale of land meets sea, dry to wet, honey tones illuminated by blue-white and the crackling earth and trees encompassing it all.
The exhibition will be on until Thursday 19th July, for those in the Altona area.
